## Summary
Adds the enhancement proposed in #15470. Each package in the dependency
tree now shows its compressed wheel file size, reading the wheel sizes
directly from the lockfile (uv.lock). Doesn't break existing tree
formatting or options. If no wheel size is available, nothing is added.
Now, developers can identify large packages in their dependency tree.
The tree still shows extras exactly as before, and then appends a size
for the package.

Prior to this PR, there were numerous places where uv would leak
credentials in logs. We had a way to mask credentials by calling methods
or a recently-added `redact_url` function, but this was not secure by
default. There were a number of other types (like `GitUrl`) that would
leak credentials on display.
This PR adds a `DisplaySafeUrl` newtype to prevent leaking credentials
when logging by default. It takes a maximalist approach, replacing the
use of `Url` almost everywhere. This includes when first parsing config
files, when storing URLs in types like `GitUrl`, and also when storing
URLs in types that in practice will never contain credentials (like
`DirectorySourceUrl`). The idea is to make it easy for developers to do
the right thing and for the compiler to support this (and to minimize
ever having to manually convert back and forth). Displaying credentials
now requires an active step. Note that despite this maximalist approach,
the use of the newtype should be zero cost.
One conspicuous place this PR does not use `DisplaySafeUrl` is in the
`uv-auth` crate. That would require new clones since there are calls to
`request.url()` that return a `&Url`. One option would have been to make
`DisplaySafeUrl` wrap a `Cow`, but this would lead to lifetime
annotations all over the codebase. I've created a separate PR based on
this one (#13576) that updates `uv-auth` to use `DisplaySafeUrl` with
one new clone. We can discuss the tradeoffs there.
Most of this PR just replaces `Url` with `DisplaySafeUrl`. The core is
`uv_redacted/lib.rs`, where the newtype is implemented. To make it
easier to review the rest, here are some points of note:
* `DisplaySafeUrl` has a `Display` implementation that masks
credentials. Currently, it will still display the username when there is
both a username and password. If we think is the wrong choice, it can
now be changed in one place.
* `DisplaySafeUrl` has a `remove_credentials()` method and also a
`.to_string_with_credentials()` method. This allows us to use it in a
variety of scenarios.
* `IndexUrl::redacted()` was renamed to
`IndexUrl::removed_credentials()` to make it clearer that we are not
masking.
* We convert from a `DisplaySafeUrl` to a `Url` when calling `reqwest`
methods like `.get()` and `.head()`.
* We convert from a `DisplaySafeUrl` to a `Url` when creating a
`uv_auth::Index`. That is because, as mentioned above, I will be
updating the `uv_auth` crate to use this newtype in a separate PR.
* A number of tests (e.g., in `pip_install.rs`) that formerly used
filters to mask tokens in the test output no longer need those filters
since tokens in URLs are now masked automatically.
* The one place we are still knowingly writing credentials to
`pyproject.toml` is when a URL with credentials is passed to `uv add`
with `--raw`. Since displaying credentials is no longer automatic, I
have added a `to_string_with_credentials()` method to the `Pep508Url`
trait. This is used when `--raw` is passed. Adding it to that trait is a
bit weird, but it's the simplest way to achieve the goal. I'm open to
suggestions on how to improve this, but note that because of the way
we're using generic bounds, it's not as simple as just creating a
separate trait for that method.
## Summary
If you use `--torch-backend=auto`, we want to avoid selecting (e.g.) a
`+cu124` build of `torch` alongside a `+cu126` build of `torchvision`.
We want to build `uv-build` without depending on the network crates. In
preparation for that, we split uv-git into uv-git and uv-git-types,
where only uv-git depends on reqwest, so that uv-build can use
uv-git-types.
## Summary
A bug in `requires_python` (which infers the Python requirement from a
marker) was leading us to break an invariant around the relationship
between the marker environment and the Python requirement. This, in
turn, was leading us to drop parts of the environment space when
solving.
Specifically, in the linked example, we generated a fork for
`python_full_version < '3.10' or platform_python_implementation !=
'CPython'`, which was later split into `python_full_version == '3.8.*'`
and `python_full_version == '3.9.*'`, losing the
`platform_python_implementation != 'CPython'` portion.

N.B. After fixing #10430, `ArcStr` became the fastest implementation
(and the gains were significantly reduced, down to 1-2%). See:

## Summary
I tried out a variety of small string crates, but `Arc<str>`
outperformed them, giving a ~10% speed-up:

This adds support for providing conflicting group names in addition to
extra names to `Conflicts`.
This merely makes "room" for it in the types while keeping everything
working. We'll add proper support for it in the next commit.
Note that one interesting trick we do here is depend directly on
`hashbrown` so that we can make use of its `Equivalent` trait. This in
turn lets us use things like `ConflictItemRef` as a lookup key for a
hashset that contains `ConflictItem`. This mirrors using a `&str` as a
lookup key for a hashset that contains `String`, but works for arbitrary
types. `std` doesn't support this, but `hashbrown` does. This trick in
turn lets us simplify some of our data structures.
This also rejiggers some of the serde-interaction with the conflicting
types. We now use a wire type to represent our conflicting items for
more flexibility. i.e., Support `extra` XOR `group` fields.
## Summary
This PR declares and documents all environment variables that are used
in one way or another in `uv`, either internally, or externally, or
transitively under a common struct.
I think over time as uv has grown there's been many environment
variables introduced. Its harder to know which ones exists, which ones
are missing, what they're used for, or where are they used across the
code. The docs only documents a handful of them, for others you'd have
to dive into the code and inspect across crates to know which crates
they're used on or where they're relevant.
This PR is a starting attempt to unify them, make it easier to discover
which ones we have, and maybe unlock future posibilities in automating
generating documentation for them.
I think we can split out into multiple structs later to better organize,
but given the high influx of PR's and possibly new environment variables
introduced/re-used, it would be hard to try to organize them all now
into their proper namespaced struct while this is all happening given
merge conflicts and/or keeping up to date.
I don't think this has any impact on performance as they all should
still be inlined, although it may affect local build times on changes to
the environment vars as more crates would likely need a rebuild. Lastly,
some of them are declared but not used in the code, for example those in
`build.rs`. I left them declared because I still think it's useful to at
least have a reference.
Did I miss any? Are their initial docs cohesive?
Note, `uv-static` is a terrible name for a new crate, thoughts? Others
considered `uv-vars`, `uv-consts`.

Before that, there were 91 separate integration tests binary.
(As discussed on Discord — I've done the `uv` crate, there's still a few
more commits coming before this is mergeable, and I want to see how it
performs in CI and locally).
This is preparatory work for the upload functionality, which needs to
read the METADATA file and attach its parsed contents to the POST
request: We move finding the `.dist-info` from `install-wheel-rs` and
`uv-client` to a new `uv-metadata` crate, so it can be shared with the
publish crate.
I don't properly know if its the right place since the upload code isn't
ready, but i'm PR-ing it now because it already had merge conflicts.
(This is part of #5711)
## Summary
@BurntSushi and I spotted that the `derivative` crate is only used for
one enum in the entire codebase — however, it's a proc macro, and we pay
for the cost of (re)compiling it in many different contexts.
This replaces it with a private `Inner` core which uses the regular std
derive macros — inlining and optimizations should make this equivalent
to the other implementation, and not too hard to maintain hopefully
(versus a manual impl of `PartialEq` and `Hash` which have to be kept in
sync.)

This PR migrates uv's use of `chrono` to `jiff`.
I did most of this work a while back as one of my tests to ensure Jiff
could actually be used in a real world project. I decided to revive
this because I noticed that `reqwest-retry` dropped its Chrono
dependency,
which is I believe the only other thing requiring Chrono in uv.
(Although, we use a fork of `reqwest-middleware` at present, and that
hasn't been updated to latest upstream yet. I wasn't quite sure of the
process we have for that.)
In course of doing this, I actually made two changes to uv:
First is that the lock file now writes an RFC 3339 timestamp for
`exclude-newer`. Previously, we were using Chrono's `Display`
implementation for this which is a non-standard but "human readable"
format. I think the right thing to do here is an RFC 3339 timestamp.
Second is that, in addition to an RFC 3339 timestamp, `--exclude-newer`
used to accept a "UTC date." But this PR changes it to a "local date."
That is, a date in the user's system configured time zone. I think
this makes more sense than a UTC date, but one alternative is to drop
support for a date and just rely on an RFC 3339 timestamp. The main
motivation here is that automatically assuming UTC is often somewhat
confusing, since just writing an unqualified date like `2024-08-19` is
often assumed to be interpreted relative to the writer's "local" time.
## Summary
This PR rewrites the `MarkerTree` type to use algebraic decision
diagrams (ADD). This has many benefits:
- The diagram is canonical for a given marker function. It is impossible
to create two functionally equivalent marker trees that don't refer to
the same underlying ADD. This also means that any trivially true or
unsatisfiable markers are represented by the same constants.
- The diagram can handle complex operations (conjunction/disjunction) in
polynomial time, as well as constant-time negation.
- The diagram can be converted to a simplified DNF form for user-facing
output.
The new representation gives us a lot more confidence in our marker
operations and simplification, which is proving to be very important
(see https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/pull/5733 and
https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/pull/5163).
Unfortunately, it is not easy to split this PR into multiple commits
because it is a large rewrite of the `marker` module. I'd suggest
reading through the `marker/algebra.rs`, `marker/simplify.rs`, and
`marker/tree.rs` files for the new implementation, as well as the
updated snapshots to verify how the new simplification rules work in
practice. However, a few other things were changed:
- [We now use release-only comparisons for `python_full_version`, where
we previously only did for
`python_version`](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/blob/ibraheem/canonical-markers/crates/pep508-rs/src/marker/algebra.rs#L522).
I'm unsure how marker operations should work in the presence of
pre-release versions if we decide that this is incorrect.
- [Meaningless marker expressions are now
ignored](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/blob/ibraheem/canonical-markers/crates/pep508-rs/src/marker/parse.rs#L502).
This means that a marker such as `'x' == 'x'` will always evaluate to
`true` (as if the expression did not exist), whereas we previously
treated this as always `false`. It's negation however, remains `false`.
- [Unsatisfiable markers are written as `python_version <
'0'`](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/blob/ibraheem/canonical-markers/crates/pep508-rs/src/marker/tree.rs#L1329).
- The `PubGrubSpecifier` type has been moved to the new `uv-pubgrub`
crate, shared by `pep508-rs` and `uv-resolver`. `pep508-rs` also depends
on the `pubgrub` crate for the `Range` type, we probably want to move
`pubgrub::Range` into a separate crate to break this, but I don't think
that should block this PR (cc @konstin).
There is still some remaining work here that I decided to leave for now
for the sake of unblocking some of the related work on the resolver.
- We still use `Option<MarkerTree>` throughout uv, which is unnecessary
now that `MarkerTree::TRUE` is canonical.
- The `MarkerTree` type is now interned globally and can potentially
implement `Copy`. However, it's unclear if we want to add more
information to marker trees that would make it `!Copy`. For example, we
may wish to attach extra and requires-python environment information to
avoid simplifying after construction.
- We don't currently combine `python_full_version` and `python_version`
markers.
- I also have not spent too much time investigating performance and
there is probably some low-hanging fruit. Many of the test cases I did
run actually saw large performance improvements due to the markers being
simplified internally, reducing the stress on the old `normalize`
routine, especially for the extremely large markers seen in
`transformers` and other projects.

[automatic
migration](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/pull/4735/files#r1663029330))
- User-facing messages no longer refer to toolchains, instead using
"Python", "Python versions" or "Python installations"

This would be a lightweight solution to
https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/4307 that doesn't fully engage
with all the possibilities in the design space (but would unblock
cross-platform for now).
When creating a lockfile, lock the combined dependencies for all
packages in a workspace. This make the lockfile independent of where you
are in the workspace.

I don't think it's worth maintaining this separate test harness for ~18
tests, when they can all be tested in the `uv` package itself. Let's
drop the maintenance burden.

The downside is that the inline-tables end up quite long and TOML
doesn't support line breaks in inline tables, yet.

Pubgrub stores incompatibilities as (package name, version range)
tuples, meaning it needs to clone the package name for each
incompatibility, and each non-borrowed operation on incompatibilities.
https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/pull/3673 made me realize that
`PubGrubPackage` has gotten large (expensive to copy), so like `Version`
and other structs, i've added an `Arc` wrapper around it.
It's a pity clippy forbids `.deref()`, it's less opaque than `&**` and
has IDE support (clicking on `.deref()` jumps to the right impl).
## Benchmarks
It looks like this matters most for complex resolutions which, i assume
because they carry larger `PubGrubPackageInner::Package` and
`PubGrubPackageInner::Extra` types.

## Summary
This PR introduces parallelism to the resolver. Specifically, we can
perform PubGrub resolution on a separate thread, while keeping all I/O
on the tokio thread. We already have the infrastructure set up for this
with the channel and `OnceMap`, which makes this change relatively
simple. The big change needed to make this possible is removing the
lifetimes on some of the types that need to be shared between the
resolver and pubgrub thread.
A related PR, https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/pull/1163, found that
adding `yield_now` calls improved throughput. With optimal scheduling we
might be able to get away with everything on the same thread here.
However, in the ideal pipeline with perfect prefetching, the resolution
and prefetching can run completely in parallel without depending on one
another. While this would be very difficult to achieve, even with our
current prefetching pattern we see a consistent performance improvement
from parallelism.
This does also require reverting a few of the changes from
https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/pull/3413, but not all of them. The
sharing is isolated to the resolver task.
## Test Plan
On smaller tasks performance is mixed with ~2% improvements/regressions
on both sides. However, on medium-large resolution tasks we see the
benefits of parallelism, with improvements anywhere from 10-50%.

This only makes hashes optional for wheels/sdists that come from
registires or direct URLs. For wheels/sdists that come from other
sources, a hash should not be present.
For path dependencies, a hash should not be present because the state of
the path dependency is not intended to be tracked in the lock file. This
is consistent with how other tools deal with path dependencies, and if
it were otherwise, the hash would I believe need to be updated for every
change to the path dependency.
For git dependencies (source dists only), a hash should not be present
because the lock will contain the specific commit revision hash. This is
functionally equivalent to a hash, and so a hash is redundant.
As part of this change, we validate the presence or absence of a hash
based on the dependency source. We also add our first regression tests.
In *some* places in our crates, `serde` (and `rkyv`) are optional
dependencies. I believe this was done out of reasons of "good sense,"
that is, it follows a Rust ecosystem pattern where serde integration
tends to be an opt-in crate feature. (And similarly for `rkyv`.)
However, ultimately, `uv` itself requires `serde` and `rkyv` to
function. Since our crates are strictly internal, there are limited
consumers for our crates without `serde` (and `rkyv`) enabled. I think
one possibility is that optional `serde` (and `rkyv`) integration means
that someone can do this:
cargo test -p pep440_rs
And this will run tests _without_ `serde` or `rkyv` enabled. That in
turn could lead to faster iteration time by reducing compile times. But,
I'm not sure this is worth supporting. The iterative compilation times
of
individual crates are probably fast enough in debug mode, even with
`serde` and `rkyv` enabled. Namely, `serde` and `rkyv` themselves
shouldn't need to be re-compiled in most cases. On `main`:

So while a from-scratch build does take significantly longer, an
incremental build is about the same.
The benefit of doing this change is two-fold:
1. It brings out crates into alignment with "reality." In particular,
some crates were _implicitly_ relying on `serde` being enabled
without explicitly declaring it. This technically means that our
`Cargo.toml`s were wrong in some cases, but it is hard to observe it
because of feature unification in a Cargo workspace.
2. We no longer need to deal with the cognitive burden of writing
`#[cfg_attr(feature = "serde", ...)]` everywhere.
Previously, uv-auth would fail to compile due to a missing process
feature. I chose to make all tokio features we use top level features,
so we can share the tokio cache between all test invocations.
## Summary
This PR adds basic struct definitions along with a "workspace" concept
for discovering settings. (The "workspace" terminology is used to match
Ruff; I did not invent it.)
A few notes:
- We discover any `pyproject.toml` or `uv.toml` file in any parent
directory of the current working directory. (We could adjust this to
look at the directories of the input files.)
- We don't actually do anything with the configuration yet; but those
PRs are large and I want this to be reviewed in isolation.
