dirty_ram_text_guard_resync_after_restore() cleared text_modified_bitmap,
and the page-clean fast path in dirty_ram_text_native_ok_ranges_from()
then trusted a clear bit as "bytes still equal the reference" and skipped
the compare. Restored RAM may carry self-modified text (the CMR2 class)
that no live write will ever re-flag: the bitmap is not part of the state
image, and the writes happened in the process that produced it. After a
save-state load into a fresh process, a stale native body could be
admitted for those pages.
Recompute the bitmap from the bytes: one pass over the reference range (at
most 2 MB, once per restore), setting the bit for every page that differs,
so those pages stay under the exact compare.

The BIOS exception handler ran interpreted for the life of every process,
1.22 billion instructions and 44.6% of all interpreted work in Breath of
Fire III, even though it is compiled and even though the stub that
unblessed it sat at exactly the address bios/SCPH1001.toml already
declared as an install slot. Two mechanisms existed and did not compose:
the emitter hooked the declared slot PC, while the runtime's bless
verifier memcmp'd the whole body including that slot, so the body was
MISMATCH forever and native code never reached the hook.
Three parts, none of which pays off alone:
1. Publish the declared ranges to the runtime. The emitter emits a
PsxKernelPatchRange table next to the kernel body table and routes it
through the backend descriptor; the bless verifier compares a body in
segments that skip them. CLEAN now means "every byte outside every
declared range still matches ROM", which is the claim the native code
actually depends on.
2. Generalise the slot model to what the patches are. The old model
assumed a 4-word lui/addiu/jalr/nop stub written over ROM zeros and
fired on `word != 0`. Measured against both images, only one of five
observed shapes fits: patchers also plant a `jr` over real ROM
instructions, rewrite an 11-word prologue and insert an `mfc0 Cause`,
and NOP out a driver routine. A slot is now a range with a length and
an explicit `resume` (jalr / fallthrough / none), detected by
comparing every word against its ROM-baked value.
3. Hand back from the interpreter at the range end. Kernel page 0 is
permanently dirty, because the handler saves registers there on every
exception, so straight-line interpretation would run the whole
function after the patch. The emitter registers the resume PC as a
continuation key and dirty_ram_interp surfaces there.
A PC inside a declared range must never be a native dispatch key: the
compiled bytes there are not what executes. Seven pre-existing
jal-return continuations violated that and wedged the boot at frame 0 in
an infinite dispatch loop (OpenBIOS RAM 0x357C). The emitter now drops
continuation keys inside a range so dispatch misses through to the
interpreter, and refuses to emit if a range covers a function entry,
which would silently remove a callable function instead.
Both profiles declare their measured ranges, and SCPH1001.toml finally
pins [program.image] sha256 to v2.2 (CRC32 37157331) so a v2.0 dump
refuses to generate rather than producing phantom discovery gaps.
Measured on Breath of Fire III (SLPS-00990, Psy-Q SDK 3.70), headless,
matched frames, PSX_KERNEL_PATCH_RANGES=0 for the OFF side:
OpenBIOS SCPH-1001 v2.2
bless mismatch 21 -> 0 74 -> 0
kernel bodies -87.7%/frame -97.8%/frame
all interp insns -42.6%/frame -94.2%/frame
The residual kernel-body work is exactly declared-words x entries on
every range, so nothing leaks past the hook. The A0/B0/C0 vector
trampolines are unchanged (+0.2%, noise): the profile excludes them by
design and they are a separate job. Card read traces are byte-identical
across the A/B on both images, all 32 entries, which exercises the two
ranges that replace the kernel's card handler.
Rule 18 holds throughout: the guest's patched instructions still execute
as written on the dirty-RAM interpreter. Only the code around them
changes backend. Nothing is synthesised.
Tests: runtime/tests/test_kernel_patch_ranges.c (new, the verifier's
accept/reject behaviour and the hand-back predicate) and the install-slot
range invariants in recompiler/tests/bios_address_model_test.cpp.

MERGES
SPLITGEN_MIGRATION.md folded into docs/BUILDING.md as "Split generated C". Its
migration instructions were stale in a way that mattered: it told every game
repo to hand-edit its CMakeLists and add a file(GLOB ...) over
<serial>_full*.c, but runtime/runtime.cmake now does that itself. GEN_FULL_GLOB
is a multi-value argument of psxrecomp_add_game_runtime(); the loop at
runtime.cmake:1985 makes each pattern absolute against CMAKE_CURRENT_SOURCE_DIR,
expands it with file(GLOB), and concatenates the hits into
GAME_GENERATED_FULL_C. So a title names the pattern and gets however many shards
a regeneration produced. The rewritten section describes that, the two-step
fallback when the globs match nothing (GEN_FULL_FALLBACK, else <serial>_full.c
derived from the dispatch marker by substituting _dispatch.c), and the one
caveat the code actually has: that file(GLOB) is plain, not CONFIGURE_DEPENDS,
so a regeneration which changes the shard COUNT needs a re-configure to be seen.
psxrecomp-toml-readme.md folded into docs/GAME_PROJECT_SETUP.md as "EXE-only
autofill (psxrecomp-toml)", placed after "Disc autofill (probe_disc.py)" and
before "Project Studio" so the two autofill paths sit together. Its documented
flags were checked against the usage text in recompiler/src/main_toml.cpp:28-42
and against the argument parser at :150-165 -- all seven options match with no
drift, so the flag list is reproduced as-is. Added a pointer that probe_disc.py
is preferable when a cue exists, since that tool does the same EXE-header work
plus disc identity and netplay gates.
FUNCTIONAL FIXES
tools/gen_tcp_commands.py wrote to REPO/"TCP_COMMANDS.md". After the move that
path does not exist, so the generator would have created a new stray root file
and --check would have failed against it forever. Retargeted to
REPO/"docs"/"TCP_COMMANDS.md", along with the seven docstring and message
strings that name the path.
Running it surfaced two further problems, both fixed here:
* The doc was genuinely stale -- pre-existing drift, not introduced by this
commit (the moved file is byte-identical to origin/master, and no
debug-server command table is touched here). Four commands registered since
the last regeneration were missing from the index -- cdrom_timing_dump,
savestate_status, ws_ui_groups, xprobe_watch -- and scanline had gained a
backend. Regenerated: 307 -> 311 commands, and the change is confined to the
AUTOGEN block (the hand-written head and tail are byte-identical to master).
tools/gen_tcp_commands.py --check now exits 0.
* DOC.write_text() has no newline argument, so Python translated every newline
to os.linesep. On Windows that rewrote all 585 lines of the file to CRLF and
turned a four-line index update into a whole-file diff -- measured: 589 CRLF
/ 0 LF after a run, against 0 CRLF / 585 LF in the repo. Now written through
an explicit newline="" handle, verified to leave the file at 0 CRLF.
runtime/include/debug_server.h:9 and runtime/src/debug_server.c:8 cited "TCP.md
and DEBUG.md". TCP.md has never existed in this repo under that name; both now
name docs/TCP_COMMANDS.md and docs/internal/DEBUG.md.
LINK AND REFERENCE FIXES
Every inbound reference to a moved file was located by grepping each basename
across the whole tracked tree, not just the markdown. Markdown hrefs in
README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, docs/ARCHITECTURE.md, docs/COMPILING_OVERLAYS.md,
docs/AOT_OVERLAY_PLAN.md, docs/RELOCATION_MANIFEST_FORMAT.md,
docs/config_schema.md, docs/OVERLAY_XREF.md, docs/TCP_COMMANDS.md and several
docs/internal/ files now point at the new locations; where two files became
siblings under docs/internal/ the path was shortened rather than lengthened
(bios-hardening.md's reference to overlay-discovery.md, for instance).
docs/COMPILING_OVERLAYS.md's "in this folder" phrasing was wrong once two of the
three files it listed moved, so it now names internal/ explicitly.
24 source-comment mentions of ENHANCEMENTS.md sections G1.x across 19 files
(recompiler, runtime, cmake) were retargeted to docs/ENHANCEMENTS.md with the
section numbers untouched. docs/SHADOW_ENHANCEMENTS.md is a DIFFERENT file and
was deliberately excluded.
20 rationale strings citing docs/CASE_A_AOT_GAP.md across the four
recompiler/seeds/*.json files were updated. Done as a byte-level substring
replacement rather than a JSON round-trip: two of those files are stored with
CRLF endings and two with LF, and re-serializing them reformatted 5,700 lines.
The byte-level version changes exactly 20 lines and each file still parses.
References that look similar but point elsewhere were deliberately left alone,
and are worth naming so a future pass does not "fix" them:
* "recomp-template PRINCIPLES.md" / "NES recomp template PRINCIPLES.md" in
CLAUDE.md:43, docs/SHADOW_ENHANCEMENTS.md:28,
docs/internal/HLE_SCHEDULER_CARVEOUT_PLAN.md:5,
runtime/src/debug_server.c:4934 and tools/parity_diff.py:8 are a different
repository's file. Only the five that mean this repo's PRINCIPLES.md were
updated.
* Every remaining bare ISSUES.md mention is a GAME repo's tracker
(MegaManX6Recomp 2/7/8/9, TombaRecomp 6), not this repo's.
* docs/disc-speed.md:4,54,56 and docs/internal/bios-hardening.md:5 name
overlay-discovery as a BRANCH, not a file, so no path applies.
INDEXES
README.md's "New here?" table gains rows for docs/WIDESCREEN.md,
docs/ENHANCEMENTS.md and docs/TCP_COMMANDS.md. docs/internal/README.md gains
sections indexing all fourteen documents that moved in, plus an "Upstream
contributor reviews" section describing upstream/ and the new sweep file, plus a
"Removed" bullet for CYCLE_TIMING_ARCH.md (deleted in the previous commit)
pointing at FAITHFUL_TIMING_PLAN.md, CYCLE_MODEL_BEETLE.md and
PRECISE_IRQ_SLICE.md -- following the SLJIT_PERSIST_CACHE.md precedent already
in that file.
docs/ENHANCEMENTS.md:7 claimed framework bugs live in "game repos' ISSUES.md
until a framework tracker exists". A framework tracker does exist; it now says
so and names the Beads epic.
VERIFICATION
A link checker was written to scan every tracked *.md for relative links,
resolving each against the tree being scanned. Baseline at origin/master: 129
files, 137 relative links, 3 broken. After both commits: 127 files, 159 relative
links, 3 broken -- the SAME three, all pre-existing and untouched here:
docs/DATA_SHARDS.md -> INSTANT_LOADS_PARKED.md (never existed)
docs/DATA_SHARDS.md -> INSTANT_LOADS_SPIKE2.md (never existed)
docs/NETPLAY.md -> ../lib/recomp-net/README.md (inside a submodule)
Zero new broken links. The checker's own coverage was checked against a raw grep
for markdown link openers: the 3-link difference is C++ lambdas inside code
blocks, correctly not treated as links.
Also verified: py_compile over all 113 tracked tools/*.py plus psxrecomp_cli.py;
all four seed JSONs still parse; the test-registration guard still reports 123
test files all registered; recompiler/tests/test_coverage_vault.py still passes;
and no file in this commit had its line endings flipped (checked mechanically
across all 50 modified files, after two files were caught and redone).

dirty_ram_text_native_ok_ranges_from clipped validation to
[exec_pc, end), assuming a continuation never fetches bytes behind its
resume PC. False for any entry with a backward edge: a post-call
continuation re-enters mid-function and loops back into the clipped
region, executing stale static code. CMR2's overlay engine carries a
second copy of the vertex-transform kernel at 0x80016B34 that forked
exactly this way (r16 +0xA0 static vs +0x100 live, the same 0x60
delta as the first locus) after the inter-piece transfer guards
closed the fallthrough edge.
Validation now covers every emitted range of the entry regardless of
resume PC. A genuinely patched prologue blocks the whole entry to the
dirty-RAM interpreter -- correct, merely slower.
A game that overlays its own text at runtime (CMR2 streams transform-
loop variants with patched projection constants over the boot EXE)
kept executing the stale static translation through inter-piece host
transfers: dispatch validates an entry's emitted ranges, but split
function pieces chain via direct host calls (fallthrough to split
piece / next function, legacy non-CPS split branch/jump/continuation
transfers, non-CPS direct jal) with no revalidation. A clean entry
piece falls through natively into a stale sibling whose live bytes an
overlay replaced -- the CMR2 attract/gameplay wedge corruption
(first divergence: one ADDI immediate, screen-center 160 static vs
256 live, at 0x800199D4, retirement 3,203,596,289, frame ~11963).
Emit at every such transfer:
if (!psx_game_text_native_ok(T)) { cpu->pc = T; return; }
publishing the PC and unwinding to the trampoline, whose dispatch
takes the sanctioned dirty-RAM-interpreter fallback over live bytes.
The non-CPS direct jal falls back to call_by_address instead.
dirty_ram_text_native_ok_ranges_from gains a page-clean fast path
(skip the memcmp when no touched page is guard-modified or runtime-
dirty) so the guards are near-free on pristine pages.
cosim.py: print full A/B cpu dumps in cpudiff mode (values, not just
diffs).
The overlay-region model assumed the boot EXE sits at the bottom of RAM:
[KERNEL_END, text_end) is main-EXE text, [text_end, RAM) is runtime-loaded
overlay code. That holds for a load_address of 0x80010000, where the text
base equals the kernel-window end and the region below the text is empty.
It is false for a boot EXE that loads HIGH and streams its gameplay code
into the RAM beneath itself. Klonoa loads a 46 KB stub at 0x80180000 and
runs its overlays from 0x10000-0x130000, so the floor landed at 0x18B000
and the entire overlay region fell below it:
- dirty_ram_clear_image_baseline() wiped the dirty bits across
[0x10000, 0x18B000) believing it was the clean compiled text image.
- the dirty_ram_dispatch_inner admit heuristic requires phys >= floor,
so a JALR into an overlay page the CD had DMA'd there (never touched
by the CPU write hooks, so never marked dirty) was refused by the
interpreter, fell through to psx_unknown_dispatch and fail-fast
exit(1) — Klonoa, frame 687, target 0x80123D00.
Pin the text BASE (g_text_image_lo) alongside the floor and route the
gates through one predicate: the overlay region is both sides of the text
image, not just above it. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (0x80113B00) and
Bomberman Fantasy Race (0x8003004C) load high too.
No-op for bottom-loading games: g_text_image_lo stays at its 0x10000
default, the below-text clause is empty, and the baseline clear starts at
the same page as before.
Klonoa now runs 6874+ frames at a locked 60 fps with fail-fast on and
zero unknown dispatches; it previously died at frame 687.

Closes the four gaps named in issue #103 and lands the separable, verified
parts of PR #102. See docs/internal/SPU_FIDELITY_103.md for the per-piece
disposition and the oracle-verification queue.
SPU DSP (issue #103), clean-room from hardware documentation:
- Reverb: the documented 22050 Hz engine — vLIN/vRIN input, same-side and
crossed different-side IIR reflections, 4-tap comb early echo, both
all-pass filters, vLOUT/vROUT output, and the work-area address advance.
Gated on SPUCNT bit 7 for WRITES only; reads, IRQ checks, address advance
and output always run, as on hardware. Addressing is confined to
[mBASE, 0x80000). Per-voice sends from EON, CD send from SPUCNT bits 0+2.
- Noise: 16-bit LFSR with the documented parity feedback, clocked at the
SPUCNT bits 8-13 rate; NON voices substitute it for their ADPCM sample.
- Volume sweeps: all 24 voice L/R plus main L/R. Bit 15 selects sweep vs
direct; sweep is a live envelope on the same rate machinery as ADSR, and a
guest read of a sweeping register returns the live level.
- Capture buffers: CD L/R and voice 1/3 output written to SPU RAM, so a game
that parks the IRQ address there still gets its interrupt.
- SPU IRQ (I_STAT bit 9): checked at every SPU RAM access class — FIFO, DMA
both directions, ADPCM block fetch, capture writes, reverb work-area
accesses — gated on SPUCNT bit 6, mirrored in SPUSTAT bit 6, acked by
clearing SPUCNT bit 6.
The CD-only fast path in spu_render was removed rather than extended: the
SPU now has per-frame work that must run in every path, and an FMV (XA audio
with zero active voices) is exactly the CD-with-reverb case.
This is a clean-room implementation from the psx-spx/nocash register map and
documented algorithm. Beetle's source was deliberately not consulted: it is
GPL-2.0-or-later and this project is PolyForm Noncommercial. PR #16 was
parked for exactly that reason and PR #13's reverb was separately wrong (it
gated on bit 15 of dAPF1, an address offset, instead of SPUCNT bit 7). The
one place this knowingly deviates from hardware is the 22.05 -> 44.1 kHz
reconstruction filter, which the documentation does not specify; it is
isolated in a single function and flagged for oracle comparison.
CAUSE.IP2 (from PR #102):
IP2 is combinational on R3000A — it mirrors the interrupt line and falls the
instant the guest acks I_STAT or masks the source. It was being OR'd in at
delivery and never cleared, in TWO places (the compiled path and
psx_interpreter.c, the latter missed by PR #102), leaving a phantom pending
interrupt that can spin a kernel dispatcher looping on CAUSE.IP & SR.IM.
psx_irq_refresh_cause_ip2() is now the sole writer of bit 10, refreshed at
raise, I_STAT ack, I_MASK write, HLE context restore and power-on. Verified
against the Beetle oracle's irq.cpp/cpu.cpp rather than asserted, and
covered by test_cause_ip2_combinational.
Mid-dispatch audio pump (from PR #102), with a fix: routed through a gate
that mirrors sdl_audio_update's mute/sink decision. Pumping unconditionally
from the VBlank edge, as submitted, would have pushed real audio during every
turbo-load hard mute and defeated the freeze-in-place mute model.
SPU RAM DMA readback (from PR #102): DMA4 in the SPU->RAM direction wrote
literal zeros; SPU RAM is readable memory and titles carry state through it
across an Exec boundary.
Also fixes an unrelated build race found on the way: tools/embed_spirv.py
wrote its intermediate SPIR-V to <source>.spv, so the two runtime targets
that embed the same shaders raced on one path and one deleted the file the
other was reading.

it stops checking the entire PSX disc for full hash check every time the launcher runs, assuming the user's hash checked it when selecting the disc the first time and saving it to settings, so it just validates the file name and size instead, then it shares lifecycle with the launcher and the game to load the game faster, and several optimizations were made to loadstate paths which I think in the end relied on reanchoring host timings to the restored clock that came with the state
Adds PCSX-Redux's MIT-licensed OpenBIOS as a second BIOS the framework can
statically recompile, next to retail SCPH1001. Because OpenBIOS is
redistributable, a game verified against it ships its BIOS with the build —
players supply only a disc, and the launcher BIOS picker disappears.
The mechanism is general, not OpenBIOS-specific: every BIOS image gets a
bios/<STEM>.toml profile that is the single source of truth for its identity
and layout.
Recompiler
- bios/<STEM>.toml profiles: [program.image] (sha256 pin, redistributable
flag), [recompiler.address_model] (boot-time ROM->RAM copy windows,
kernel-bless window), install_slots, and [recompiler.runtime_exports]
HLE anchors (0 = feature structurally unavailable on that BIOS).
- BiosAddressModel (new): validated model built from the profile, replacing
~9 hardcoded SCPH1001 window constants that had drifted apart across the
emitter / discovery / game codegen. The emitted C normalize() derives
from the same table. from_config rejects overlapping/misaligned windows
and orderings where sequential folding != first-match. A CTest-registered
equivalence test sweeps every RAM/ROM address against verbatim copies of
the old helpers.
- Orphaned delay slots (the OpenBIOS-critical emitter fixes): jr/jalr
slots are inlined before the jump resolves — previously their side
effect was silently LOST (e.g. a case-return fragment's addiu $sp pop,
which unwound a shifted frame and walked the exception handler's IntRP
cursor into a wild dispatch). Orphaned branches resume at ds+4 on
not-taken instead of re-executing the slot (a read-modify-write slot
doubling twice broke OpenBIOS readPad). Jump targets latch pre-slot.
- MIPS-I load-delay modeling for dependent load pairs: the successor sees
the pre-load value (OpenBIOS's cardfasttrack.s relies on it on purpose —
"gotta break those bad emulators"). Unmodeled shapes warn at build time.
- Discovery hardening: branch-target dispatchability closure to fixpoint;
jump tables placed at jr+8 no longer walked as code; cross-function
continuations routed by an instruction->owner map.
- Signed MULT support (unreachable from the retail seed set; modern-GCC
OpenBIOS emits it freely), latency-modeled like MULTU.
- Seeds from ELF symbol tables + data-section code-pointer harvest
(tools/gen_bios_seeds_from_elf.py) — a source-built BIOS needs no
disassembly pass. 646 OpenBIOS seeds, incl. 5 empirical dispatch-miss
seeds.
- Stemmed outputs (<out_stem>_full.c / _dispatch.c) so two BIOSes coexist
in one out_dir. tools/regen_bios.sh is profile-driven (--config).
Runtime
- psx_bios_image: the generated dispatch now self-describes the BIOS it
was compiled from (identity: size/CRC32/SHA-256/wordsum; kernel-bless
window; HLE anchors; bundled flag). Runtime SCPH1001 hardcodes removed.
- Launch check is a hard identity gate (a mismatched image under
statically recompiled code is a guaranteed wild jump). Bundled builds
hide the BIOS picker and treat a missing/tampered bundled image as an
installation defect.
- Faithfulness fixes surfaced by OpenBIOS's tighter timing loops (all
global, argued in code comments, regression-tested against SCPH1001):
- SIO pad RX is cycle-paced like the memcard path (RX_RDY at
shift-complete, ACK +170); total ack-IRQ latency unchanged.
PSX_SIO_PAD_SYNC_RX=1 restores the legacy synchronous path for A/B.
- SPUSTAT derived from SPUCNT instead of permanently-asserted busy.
- GPUSTAT.13 (interlace field) alternates per vblank while interlaced,
pinned 0 in progressive.
- CD Init(0x0A) completes in ~3.9 ms instead of borrowing Beetle's
34 ms Reset figure (OpenBIOS's short bounded retry loop livelocked).
- Exception EPC guard accepts ROM-window block leaders, not just RAM.
- New TCP debug commands (documented in TCP_COMMANDS.md): bios_info,
s3_smear_watch, callret_watch; write-trace ring gains $s0-$s5.
bios/openbios.bin is vendored (MIT — notice in bios/OpenBIOS.LICENSE,
attribution in THIRD_PARTY_ATTRIBUTION.md, source pin + build recipe in
bios/OpenBIOS.toml). The emitter fingerprint digest is now content-only:
existing generated/*.emitter.sha will read STALE once; re-run
tools/regen_bios.sh.

The generated dispatcher ran kernel-window table hits (RAM [0x500,0x8500),
the BIOS's boot-time copy of ROM 0x1FC10000+) natively with NO check that
the live RAM bytes still match the ROM image the functions were compiled
from — unsound for runtime-patched kernel code (the BIOS installs pad/SIO
handlers INSIDE compiled bodies; live diff: 15 clusters, 348 bytes). It
never misfired only because entry points happened to avoid patched keys.
A static kernel hit now requires psx_kernel_bless_dispatchable(): the
emitter emits psx_bios_kernel_bodies[] (key -> full RAM extent of the code
reachable from it; continuations carry their parent's extent, 499 entries),
and the runtime lazily byte-compares each entry's body against the ROM
source, caches the verdict, and invalidates precisely on writes into the
body (store chokepoint, DMA/EXE range marks, savestate restore). Clean ->
guarded native; patched/unverifiable -> the faithful dirty-RAM interpreter,
exactly as Rule 18 prescribes. This implements the runtime half of the
relocation-manifest contract (docs/RELOCATION_MANIFEST_FORMAT.md).
Measured on Tomba (SCUS-94236): 208-214 of 219 verified functions clean
(the 5 mismatches are the genuinely patched pad-driver family, faithfully
interpreted); millions of guarded native hits per boot; title 1.00x,
village 0.92x (parity — kernel keys were already native, now they are
PROVEN native); LLE and HLE boots + gameplay input verified. Kernel-window
interp measures 1.3% of interp burden (dirty_ram_stats), so this is a
soundness fix, not a speedup; the dominant interp cost is overlay-region
coverage (cg-tag hygiene), tracked separately.
Observability: TCP kernel_bless (entries/clean/mismatch/native_hits/
verifies/invalidations), always-on. PSX_KERNEL_BLESS=0 reverts to
unguarded-table behavior for A/B.

The dirty-RAM text-image guard (685f38d) only armed when the loose local
boot-EXE file next to game.toml existed - found via find_project_root's
repo-marker walk. End-user release installs have neither a repo checkout
nor the EXE file (it is copyrighted game data), so the guard silently
never armed. Without it, fntrace's alternate game-start latch
(psx_game_address_in_text && dirty_ram_text_native_ok) cannot fire for
titles whose BIOS handoff enters text inside the shell-window shadow
(RAM 0x30000-0x5AFFF -> shell ROM until game-start): the shadow never
lifts, execution runs dead shell ROM bytes over real game text, and the
boot dies in a jump to PC=0 (Ape Escape v0.0.2/v0.0.3 release zips,
frame 14, both HLE and LLE boots; in-repo runs armed invisibly and
masked the bug during validation).
Fix, class-level for every title:
- main.cpp: defer guard arming until the disc path is resolved and add a
second source - extract the boot EXE from the mounted disc image via
ISOReader (basename of game.toml's exe field, SYSTEM.CNF BOOT token
fallback). The disc is the same bytes the BIOS loads, i.e. the true
reference; every install has one. Local EXE file still wins for dev
checkouts. A loud WARNING prints when neither source arms (previously
silent, which is how the broken releases shipped green).
- fntrace.c: the alternate game-start latch now requires a registered
image (dirty_ram_text_image_registered). Its safety argument - "RAM
still holds shell bytes that differ from the game image, so it cannot
fire prematurely" - only holds when an image exists; with no image,
native_ok degrades to !dirty and untouched text pages pass it,
latching game-start before the EXE loads and clearing the dirty
baseline mid-load. Without an image, only the exact entry_pc dispatch
may latch (the pre-685f38d conservative behavior).
Verified: v0.0.3 zip contents + rebuilt exe in an isolated directory
(no repo above it) boots to the Ape Escape intro on both HLE and LLE
paths, guard armed from disc SCUS_944.23; in-repo runs still arm from
the local EXE.

- sio: echo sector MSB/LSB during the memcard write address phase
(new MC_WRITE_LSB_ECHO state), matching hardware/Beetle; the BIOS
card-write path validates this echo before scheduling the follow-up
directory reads.
- memory: treat BIOS trampoline-mirror and delay-loop scratch stores to
RAM 0x0..0x10 as non-visible after game start (hardware/Beetle do not
expose them), preserving Tomba 2 sector-63 card-management payload
passed as buffer=0 to _card_write.
- memory: stop the BIOS card-manager cleanup helper (kernel 0x1C5C)
from re-arming/consuming the public MARK card event between
DeliverEvent and the game TestEvent poll (narrowly keyed to the EvCB
layout), which left Tomba 2 stuck at "Checking MEMORY CARD...".
- fntrace: clear the low boot scratch at game-start handoff.
Fix authored by Codex; validated by user: Tomba 2 save/load PASS, plus
cross-title regression gate (Ape Escape, Tomba, Mega Man X6) all PASS,
all built against this runtime.

Detect a side-effect-free poll loop by its repeated same-PC interrupt
checks and, when the window touched no MMIO and issued no stores,
fast-forward guest time to the next internal device event
(vblank/timer/cdrom/dma/sio) in whole loop quanta — bit-exact versus
executing the spins one by one. Off switch: PSX_IDLE_SKIP=0 env or the
idle_skip TCP command; gated off in exception context, precise mode, and
lockstep.
memory.c adds the two always-on gates the skip requires: g_guest_store_count
(bumped at every raw store chokepoint) and g_mmio_access_count (bumped on
every device-page read/write). Any store or MMIO touch in the window
disqualifies it as a pure poll loop.

Master's text-divergence guard (dirty_ram_text_native_ok) blocked native dispatch
of any compiled function whose text page is runtime-dirty (an overlay overwrote
it), falling back to interp and — when the entry can't be resolved there — to
psx_unknown_dispatch (FATAL). Tsumu's translation layer patches string/glyph DATA
tables that share a 4 KB page (and the guard's 256-byte compare window) with real
compiled functions, so a data patch diverged the page and fatally blocked
func_80070248 on boot ("unknown dispatch: 0x80070248").
Two-part faithful fix (general, not per-game):
- dirty_ram_text_native_ok now decides on the dirty/flagged path by BYTE-COMPARING
the entry window against the reference image, not the coarse page-dirty
heuristic. A data-only change no longer blocks a function whose own code bytes
are unchanged; a genuine code overwrite still diverges -> interp (guard intent
preserved). Pristine pages keep the no-compare fast path.
- New dirty_ram_text_bless(phys,bytes,len): text_xlate blesses every in-place RAM
patch (glyph/msg_inplace/msg_sep) into the (runtime-owned, mutable) reference
image, so intentional data patches read as data. Genuine game self-mod writing
DIFFERENT bytes still diverges and is still caught.
Verified: Tsumu boots to the title screen with the English translation applied,
no fatal. Benefits every title (more precise guard).
