Conflict: recompiler/src/pgxp_hook_emitter.cpp, 13 hunks.
Both sides independently fixed the same defect — a PGXP hook appended on
the same line as a trailing `#endif` is swallowed by the preprocessor as
extra tokens and silently discarded, so the MULT/DIV/MFLO/MFHI hooks
never ran.
Took upstream's resolution:
- Local fix hard-coded a trailing-"#endif" test at function entry and
spliced "\n{}\n" around the emission.
- Upstream factors the test into
emission_ends_on_preprocessor_directive(), which scans the last line
properly (leading whitespace, any directive, not just #endif) and is
EXPORTED. code_generator.cpp:1709 and strict_translator.cpp — both
arriving in this same merge — call it to guard their own same-line
appenders, so the local version would have left those two callers
with an undefined symbol.
The local side also newline-guarded the START of the emission. Dropping
that is safe: every block-cycles emission literal already begins with
'\n' (gte_stall, gte_read, the muldiv set/stall blocks), so a directive
never lands mid-line there.
Verified: recompiler builds; emitter_directive_line_test and
lwlr_load_delay_forward pass; generated code for mult/mflo puts
PGXP_MULDIV, PGXP_ALU and the trailing disassembly comment each on their
own line after #endif; the PR #172 deferred-load/PGXP scoping fix still
holds; spu.c compiles against this game's build and test_spu_pitch_zero
passes all 14 assertions.
Pre-existing on this branch, unrelated to the merge: 7 ctest failures
(dirty_text_admission_guards, aot_overlay_discovery,
mod_owned_display_controls, launcher_vulkan_option,
mod_load_acceleration, overlay_decodable_fallback, vk_present_wait_stage)
— all inspect files this merge does not touch.

Conflict: recompiler/src/code_generator.cpp, deferred-load emitter.
Both sides fixed the same bug — the psx_ldd_<addr> temp going out of
scope when PGXP wraps the load in its own `{ ... }` block. Took the
upstream resolution, which is a superset:
- Local backport hoisted the declaration to function scope.
- Upstream declares it at the top of the pair block instead (same
scope fix, tighter), AND repoints the PGXP_LOAD hook's value
argument at the temp. The local version left the hook reading
cpu->gpr[N], which still holds the pre-load value because the
writeback is deferred — so PGXP recorded a stale word.
Upstream's LWL/LWR forwarding (set_lwlr_merge_forward and the
full-function emitter's ldd_lwlr_forward set) auto-merged and is kept.
Verified: recompiler builds; test_lwlr_load_delay_forward.py and
test_dirty_text_continuation_guards.py pass; emitted code for a
dependent load pair declares the temp once inside the pair block, has
PGXP_LOAD read the temp, and keeps the writeback in scope. The six
runtime files touched by both sides compile clean against this game's
generated sources.

The coercion this branch removes had stood since the original SPU commit with
nothing to catch it: no test touched a pitch of zero, and accuracy/axis5_spu.md
lists pitch as implemented without mentioning it.
Four cases, staged directly against spu.c the way
test_spu_end_without_repeat.c does:
- pitch 0 holds -- phase, sample index, cur_addr and the emitted sample all
unchanged across 500 output samples, and the voice stays active
- a held voice does not walk into the blocks that follow it, which is the
shape the bug took in practice
- pitch 0x1000 still decodes the next block after 28 samples, and 0x0800
advances half as fast, so the test cannot pass by the voice being dead or
the accumulator being treated as a switch
- the envelope still steps while the voice is held, and a key-off still
releases and retires it -- holding the sample must not trade one stuck
voice for another
Three consecutive blocks are staged with different sample data so an incorrect
forward walk changes the output audibly instead of reading more of the same.
Checked in both directions: 14/14 pass with the fix, and reintroducing the
coercion fails exactly the five checks that describe it.
The dirty-RAM interpreter reused a suffix-aware validity check when resuming generated code after a patched call site. If an entry prologue had been overwritten but its resume suffix still matched, execution could enter stale AOT code and fall through to another generated piece without redispatch.
Emit a whole-entry predicate for straight-line handoffs, retain suffix checks for explicit guest transfers, and fail closed for older generated dispatchers until regeneration.
Validated with the MGS PAL 6,875-frame route, manual codec-to-heliport gameplay, focused continuation-guard tests, and a current-upstream recompiler build.
Three changes, one fix and two pieces of visibility.
1. ws_ui_group_assign gains a third join: consecutive in the ordering-table
walk AND touching. WipEout 3's speed/shield readout ends at x=288 and the
meter bar it belongs to starts at x=306 with a different CLUT, so neither
shared columns nor a matching key could join them. The readout stood alone,
its bbox midpoint 256.5 landed in the middle third against a screen centre of
254, and it stayed pinned near centre while its own meters went to the right
edge -- a 2 px gap in 4:3 opening to 159 framebuffer pixels at 32:9.
No anchor threshold can fix that: the genuinely centred "pit ... check"
message sits FARTHER RIGHT (midpoint 300.5) than the mis-anchored readout, so
any threshold reaching the readout drags the message with it. Submission order
is the only signal that separates them, and the array already carries it.
Simulated against seven captures spanning three aspects and two code states,
this forms three unions and changes exactly one anchor: [225,288] centre
becomes [225,486] right. The other two unions ([208,240]+[240,361],
[364,447]+[450,473]) are within an anchor. Confirmed in-race at 32:9: 7 runs,
lap readout left, speed readout and meters together on the right.
2. ws_ui_groups reports why primitives were NOT admitted to the partition.
Each gate in ws_ui_prepass_add is a silent return, so a primitive left at its
raw 4:3 X while its neighbours are squashed -- which is how a HUD mark ends up
stranded mid-screen -- was indistinguishable from one never drawn. In-race at
32:9: opcode 367, not_axis 410, everything else 0.
3. geom_correction reports perspective-UV arming with a real denominator.
perspective_triangles could previously only be compared against gp0_draw,
which counts untextured primitives that are correctly never armed, so it read
as a coverage figure without being one. texcorr.attempts counts exactly the
textured triangles reaching the predicate. In-race at 32:9: 199599 submitted,
96.15% armed, 3.85% rejected for a missing per-vertex Z, 0% for correction
disabled or a missing packet address.

The thirds anchor is chosen per union-find run, and runs only joined when the
group key matched within JOIN_GAP. That key folds CLUT, texpage, a 24px Y band
and the poly-vs-rect family together, so a digit and the box it is drawn on
could never land in the same run. They got independent anchors and were
squashed about different points, which pulls one piece of a readout toward a
screen edge and leaves the rest behind -- worse the wider the frame.
On WipEout 3's race HUD at 32:9 the lap readout draws its digits at
y=[219,227] x=[137,202] and the box they label at y=[228,244] x=[138,202].
The digits anchored left, the box anchored centre, and the box landed about
500 screen pixels from the digits it belongs to.
Join on being one visual element as well as on the key: share screen columns
and touch vertically within STACK_GAP. Both halves are needed. Column overlap
alone merged the top-left lap counter with the bottom-left lap timer 200
scanlines below, and since union is transitive that chained all 71 HUD
primitives into one run spanning the full width, which anchors centre and
drags the corners inward. A strict row intersection missed the stacked case
above, whose seam is one pixel.
WsUiGroupItem carries y/height for this; the anchor stays horizontal. After:
9 runs, bottom-left readout whole and anchored left, timer and energy bar
right, speed centre -- matching the 4:3 layout.

PR #134 fixed test_netplay_snap_ring.c's harness. This addresses why it broke:
its only build instructions were a gcc command line in a header comment, and a
comment cannot fail. 16 of the 41 C/C++ tests in runtime/tests/ were in that
state, plus 3 python guards. Four had already rotted against the runtime API.
Worse, two tests that WERE registered did not link on origin/master --
sio_dualshock_rumble_test (psx_read_word / psx_get_cycle_count / i_mask /
g_debug_last_store_pc) and spu_fidelity_test (crc32_update) -- so `ctest` in a
runtime tree did not build at all.
Registering them fixes the instance. check_test_registration.cmake fixes the
class: it reads both CMakeLists.txt files as text and fails configure on any
test file that is neither registered nor listed with a reason. Reading them as
text (rather than adding a top-level CMakeLists.txt) keeps the BIOS-free
recompiler tree configurable, which is the only tree a newcomer can configure;
both projects call the guard, so each catches orphans in the other.
CONFIGURE_DEPENDS matters: without it, ADDING a test would not re-run configure.
Also incorporates TechnicallyComputers' review of #134. -Werror turns a
pre-existing Linux warning into a hard failure: clock_gettime/CLOCK_MONOTONIC
need _POSIX_C_SOURCE under a strict -std=cNN. Both halves are needed -- the
define in netplay_snap_ring.c fixes a direct compile of that TU, but not the
harness, which includes <stdio.h> first and so has already latched glibc's
<features.h>. Verified on Ubuntu 24.04 / GCC 13.3.
Test-file changes:
* repaired 4 rotted tests (stubs / a changed parameter list), no logic edits
* build recipes replaced with `ctest -R <name>`, so exactly one description
of how a test builds exists and the build executes it
* known-failing tests registered DISABLED, not de-registered -- de-registering
is the mechanism that hid these in the first place; DISABLED keeps them in
`ctest -N` and countable without turning the run red
* sio_card_protocol_test runs in a build-tree scratch dir; it writes
test_dir/card1.mcd, and that is a TRACKED fixture
* removed three committed test binaries and widened the .gitignore rule that
missed them (it only covered *.exe, and these were Linux builds)
Disabled, each with a bead: sio_card_protocol_test (147/309),
sio_dualshock_rumble_test (27), spu_fidelity_test (4 ADSR), aot_overlay_discovery
(cwd), and the 3 pre-existing perf guards.
Verified:
* adding an unregistered test file fails the build with an actionable message;
removing it passes
* runtime ctest 32/32 pass, 3 disabled
* recompiler ctest: same 5 failures as a pristine origin/master baseline
* Tomba, Tomba 2 and MMX6 build against this framework and were each driven
240s of attract + randomised pad fuzz (~195 injections, 47+ combos):
59.6 fps sustained, zero stalls, all three reached real gameplay

Load acceleration moved to the Mods catalog in 125d84d
(psx.enhancement.fast-loading "Fast Loading (host pacing)" and
psx.enhancement.cd-speed, both `game_id = "*"` so they ship with every
title, both default-off), and recomp-ui deliberately stopped drawing a
generic Turbo loads row. But the legacy switch was left live here with
`offer_turbo_loads` defaulting TRUE, so any title that had not explicitly
migrated still got turbo forced on — with no UI to turn it back off.
That shipped to players. MegaManX6Recomp v1.0.4 and v1.0.5 both carry
`[runtime] turbo_loads = true` in the game.toml inside the release zip
(verified by extracting the artifacts). Two paths forced it on:
* game.toml [runtime] turbo_loads set g_turbo_loads_enabled directly;
* a stale [video] turbo_loads in settings.toml was restored, and the
seed write persisted it — so one run latched the value permanently
and no later game.toml change could undo it.
Reported as MegaManX6Recomp#14: the WARNING screen self-advances and load
spinners run fast, with Turbo confirmed off in Mods. Tomba 2 hit the same
defect (fixed per-title), and MMX5 is also unmigrated. Third occurrence of
one config default, so fix the class instead of the titles.
Both keys are still PARSED, so existing configs load without error, but
neither is honoured:
* offer_turbo_loads defaults false and turbo_loads_offered becomes a
constexpr false, matching how ws_offered / skip_fmv_offered /
frame_interpolation_offered already model mod-owned features. No title
can offer the generic switch, so forgetting to migrate is no longer
punished.
* game.toml turbo_loads logs a deprecation line naming the Fast Loading
mod and enables nothing.
* settings.toml [video] turbo_loads is neither restored nor written back
out, so the stale row is dropped on the first save — same write-only
latch reasoning already documented for fast_boot, which bit harder here
because there was no UI control at all.
Also fixes a related hole found while auditing: the in-game Settings apply
path wrote both g_turbo_loads_enabled and g_auto_skip_fmv from a launcher
snapshot taken BEFORE mod_runtime_activate_plugins() ran, so the first
in-game Apply silently turned a player's enabled Fast Loading or Tweaks FMV
feature back off. Both are now gated on their offered flags.
The supported surfaces are unchanged: the Fast Loading / CD Speed mod
plugins still enable acceleration (verified: "mod selected 8x load
acceleration"), and the `turbo_loads` TCP debug command still toggles it
for development.
Verified against MMX6 built on this framework: with game.toml
`turbo_loads = true` AND `offer_turbo_loads = true` AND a stale
settings.toml `turbo_loads = true`, both deprecation lines fire and the
debug server reports enabled=0, turbo_frames=0. With the keys removed and
no mods enabled, it boots silently with enabled=0.
test_mod_load_acceleration.py is updated to pin the new contract; it also
had a stale assertion on the old 2..16 multiplier range, which is now
pinned to the symbolic PSX_MOD_LOAD_ACCEL_MAX bound. The guard-test suite
goes from 9 pre-existing failures to 8 (no new failures; this one fixed).

A misconfigured overlay_autocompile_cmd silently degrades an entire session to
the interpreter. The diagnosis machinery for this already existed and was good
— autocompile_report_broken_once() fires after 3 consecutive failures and
explains exactly what to check — but it writes to fprintf(stdout), and the
shipped runtime links -mwindows: a GUI-subsystem binary with no console. The
warning is emitted into nothing on precisely the builds people run.
Observed cost: a fresh worktree ran 100% interpreted for a whole session
(runs=8 fails=8 shard_ok=0, dispatch_native=0) because game.toml named a
recompiler path the documented build recipe does not produce. The only symptom
was "it feels slow", and it invalidated a performance A/B before anyone thought
to query the counters by hand.
Three changes:
- Validate the command's path arguments at CONFIGURE time. The existing check
resolves only the first token (the interpreter); it never looked at
--recompiler, which is the argument that actually breaks — it is hardcoded
per-title and disagrees with where the recipe builds. Paths now resolve
against the child's working directory and are checked before any compile is
attempted, rather than the truth emerging after three failed spawns.
Advisory, not fatal: the runtime still runs exactly as before, just not
silently.
- Record WHY in one string, exposed as degraded/degraded_reason in
autocompile_status over the TCP debug server. Rule 3's answer rather than
more printing. Keeps the FIRST cause, which is the useful one.
- Stamp it into psx_last_run_report.json. This is the part that prevents a
repeat: a field you have to query is a field nobody queries. A degraded run
now says so in its own artifact, so "was that measurement valid?" is
answerable after the fact instead of having to be suspected.
test_autocompile_degraded (new, registered in CTest) builds the real failure
shape and asserts it is caught at configure time, that the reason names the
offending flag, that the first cause is retained, and that the reason is
escaped so it cannot break the JSON for every consumer.
Also fixes a pre-existing %d/LONG format mismatch on last_exit that this
change's argument shuffle surfaced; warnings on autocompile.c go 2 -> 1 (the
remaining array-bounds one in watch_thread is pre-existing and untouched).
NOT done here, deliberately: the underlying cause is that every title's
game.toml hardcodes a build-directory path (Tomba 2 names a worktree-relative
dir the recipe never creates; MMX6 hardcodes an absolute path into one
checkout). Fixing that means having CMake record the real recompiler location
and touching six title repos — its own change. This one makes the failure
impossible to miss.

Closes the four gaps named in issue #103 and lands the separable, verified
parts of PR #102. See docs/internal/SPU_FIDELITY_103.md for the per-piece
disposition and the oracle-verification queue.
SPU DSP (issue #103), clean-room from hardware documentation:
- Reverb: the documented 22050 Hz engine — vLIN/vRIN input, same-side and
crossed different-side IIR reflections, 4-tap comb early echo, both
all-pass filters, vLOUT/vROUT output, and the work-area address advance.
Gated on SPUCNT bit 7 for WRITES only; reads, IRQ checks, address advance
and output always run, as on hardware. Addressing is confined to
[mBASE, 0x80000). Per-voice sends from EON, CD send from SPUCNT bits 0+2.
- Noise: 16-bit LFSR with the documented parity feedback, clocked at the
SPUCNT bits 8-13 rate; NON voices substitute it for their ADPCM sample.
- Volume sweeps: all 24 voice L/R plus main L/R. Bit 15 selects sweep vs
direct; sweep is a live envelope on the same rate machinery as ADSR, and a
guest read of a sweeping register returns the live level.
- Capture buffers: CD L/R and voice 1/3 output written to SPU RAM, so a game
that parks the IRQ address there still gets its interrupt.
- SPU IRQ (I_STAT bit 9): checked at every SPU RAM access class — FIFO, DMA
both directions, ADPCM block fetch, capture writes, reverb work-area
accesses — gated on SPUCNT bit 6, mirrored in SPUSTAT bit 6, acked by
clearing SPUCNT bit 6.
The CD-only fast path in spu_render was removed rather than extended: the
SPU now has per-frame work that must run in every path, and an FMV (XA audio
with zero active voices) is exactly the CD-with-reverb case.
This is a clean-room implementation from the psx-spx/nocash register map and
documented algorithm. Beetle's source was deliberately not consulted: it is
GPL-2.0-or-later and this project is PolyForm Noncommercial. PR #16 was
parked for exactly that reason and PR #13's reverb was separately wrong (it
gated on bit 15 of dAPF1, an address offset, instead of SPUCNT bit 7). The
one place this knowingly deviates from hardware is the 22.05 -> 44.1 kHz
reconstruction filter, which the documentation does not specify; it is
isolated in a single function and flagged for oracle comparison.
CAUSE.IP2 (from PR #102):
IP2 is combinational on R3000A — it mirrors the interrupt line and falls the
instant the guest acks I_STAT or masks the source. It was being OR'd in at
delivery and never cleared, in TWO places (the compiled path and
psx_interpreter.c, the latter missed by PR #102), leaving a phantom pending
interrupt that can spin a kernel dispatcher looping on CAUSE.IP & SR.IM.
psx_irq_refresh_cause_ip2() is now the sole writer of bit 10, refreshed at
raise, I_STAT ack, I_MASK write, HLE context restore and power-on. Verified
against the Beetle oracle's irq.cpp/cpu.cpp rather than asserted, and
covered by test_cause_ip2_combinational.
Mid-dispatch audio pump (from PR #102), with a fix: routed through a gate
that mirrors sdl_audio_update's mute/sink decision. Pumping unconditionally
from the VBlank edge, as submitted, would have pushed real audio during every
turbo-load hard mute and defeated the freeze-in-place mute model.
SPU RAM DMA readback (from PR #102): DMA4 in the SPU->RAM direction wrote
literal zeros; SPU RAM is readable memory and titles carry state through it
across an Exec boundary.
Also fixes an unrelated build race found on the way: tools/embed_spirv.py
wrote its intermediate SPIR-V to <source>.spv, so the two runtime targets
that embed the same shaders raced on one path and one deleted the file the
other was reading.
