Ahead-of-time overlay sharding
Overlays can be recompiled before gameplay without first decompiling the game. The necessary knowledge is narrower: which disc bytes become executable, where they load, how they are transformed, and which entry points and dependencies can be established. Full source recovery is not a prerequisite.
The goal is to prepare native coverage from original inputs so first visits do not depend on runtime capture and compilation. Interpreter and runtime-compiler fallbacks remain useful until individual titles demonstrate sufficient coverage. An inventory of every overlay file is not proof of every execution path.
What exists today
The framework already separates discovery from compilation:
| Layer | Existing implementation | Responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Disc/container discovery | tools/aot_overlay_spike/extract_generic.py, tools/extract_overlays.py |
Read disc files and recognized archives; recover candidate load layouts and static roots. |
| Native production | tools/compile_overlays.py, recompiler function analysis |
Walk code, recover supported indirect dispatch, compile and audit native candidates. |
| Cache selection | Runtime overlay loader, .dll/.ranges pairs |
Match the game, build/flavor ABI and current guarded bytes before dispatch. |
| Release staging | tools/release_overlay_stage.ps1 and shared packaging helpers |
Stage matching cache namespaces and fallback tooling. |
The extractor lives under aot_overlay_spike: it is useful tooling with partial
format support, not a universal overlay detector. Per-title evidence and recipes
are still required when an input format or loader layout is ambiguous. The production pipeline below adds declarative profiles for verified methods;
arbitrary game loaders still require bounded investigation.
The compiler's input option is named --captures for historical reasons. It
also accepts records produced entirely from disc bytes. That filename/schema
does not imply a playthrough or RAM capture is required.
Production pipeline and declarative profiles
tools/aot_overlay_pipeline.py owns extraction, inventory checks, native builds,
original-byte auditing and staging. Games supply JSON facts with schema
psxrecomp AOT methods v1; they do not carry copies of extractors or auditors.
The pipeline contains no game-ID branches.
python tools/aot_overlay_pipeline.py release \
--profile /game/aot/overlays.json --game-toml /game/game.toml \
--runtime-config /game/packaging/release/game.toml \
--recompiler /framework/recompiler/build/psxrecomp-game \
--work-dir /private/aot-build --stage /release/payload --gcc gcc --workers 3
Use extract instead of release and omit --stage for bounded discovery.
Every invocation creates a fresh work directory and reads the original disc;
existing shards and gameplay captures are never inputs. --runtime-config
selects the packaged code-generation settings/cache namespace while the source
project supplies BIOS profiles and extraction inputs. Never rename cache tags
to force compatibility. Python 3.11 or newer is required.
Profiles declare these reusable methods:
| Field / method | Contract |
|---|---|
disc_hashes |
Hash the cue's original data track before extracting. |
disc_set |
Instead of disc_hashes: [{name, disc_hashes}], every disc of a release whose executable images are identical. Any one matches; the images are pinned by their own content hashes, so which disc was read does not change the output. |
file_aliases |
{logical: [per-disc names]} for one file that discs name differently (SCUS_944.91, SCUS_945.84, ...). Exactly one candidate must exist; the logical name reads as that file everywhere in the profile. |
prepared_files[] |
Virtual files derived from disc bytes by a declared transform (see below). Each is verified, then usable as a file by every method and check. |
cross_image_call_roots |
Opt in (true): a jal target that other images call becomes a static discovery root of the image holding it, when the evidence at the target is the same as for local calls and exactly one image occupies that address. Finds routines only an overlay (or boot code) calls. |
generic_exclude_files[] |
{files, reason}: disc files the generic detector must not consider because the profile owns them (aliased program files are excluded automatically). |
images[].method = fixed_address_files |
Whole original files placed at a verified load_addr. Optional duplicate-leaf checks require identical bytes. |
images[].method = fixed_address_extents |
Declared {file, file_offset, base, address, size, sha256} byte extents placed at a verified load_addr. Offset rules match words checks; size and SHA-256 are required. |
mod_packages[] / mod_package |
A named, verified selection of a trusted mod package. Images and checks carrying mod_package read the original disc with that selection applied; see below. |
images[].transfer_entries |
{from: "mod_package_writes", count}: J/JAL targets inside the image, taken only from words the selected package wrote. The count pins the inventory. Optional exclude_writes: [{start, end, reason}] names intervals of package-written DATA (for example a pack linked into the EXE that the package replaced) whose words are not transfers. |
images[].method = tagged_relocated_files |
Apply a trailing two-bit ABS32/HI16/LO16/J26 relocation stream to a verified load_addr, retaining only the original loader's image interval. Destinations are explicit evidence, never inferred from a historical RAM capture. |
images[].method = counted_relocated_members |
Verify each original container's SHA-256, classify every counted member, and relocate its image at each separately established heap placement. Pin image_size and relocation_count; each member needs nonempty unique placements or an explained exclusion. New placements remain interpreted. See counted containers. |
images[].entry_pointer_offsets |
Aligned image-relative offsets of loader-established callable exports. Read the pointer after relocation, ignore null callbacks, and require every nonnull callback to target aligned code inside the image. Pointer-shaped script/data fields are not callable exports. |
images[].method = psx_exe |
Read the load address and image from a PS-X EXE header; the generic extractor may split resident and overlay floors. |
images[].method = packed_sector_members |
Decode u32 count/offset sector descriptors across ordered payload files. Verify every member classification and requested full-payload coverage; use loader-established addresses for executable members. |
images[].method = sector_extent_members |
Decode {sector offset, byte size} pairs in an archive. Use archive-relative offsets, verify the exact count and terminator, reject gaps/overlaps, and account for every member after sector rounding. Each member needs a verified load address or an explicit exclusion. |
images[].method = aligned_lzss_banks |
Read aligned stored-size pairs, decode the metadata and its tagged bank members using parameterized LZSS, verify every container and bank classification, and deduplicate exact decoded images at verified destinations. External-RAM references fail extraction. |
images[].method = indexed_lzss_members |
Read a u32 count and {offset, size, stored} descriptors, decode every member (verbatim when size == stored, otherwise bit-stream LZSS with declared parameters), require exact sizes, zero padding and a fully accounted file, and classify every member as an executable image at a verified load_addr or an explained exclusion. |
checks[].method = words |
Verify loader instructions or descriptors at explicit file offsets / virtual addresses. |
checks[].method = tagged_relocations |
Validate a complete relocation stream, retained image_size and relocation_count, including modules whose heap placement remains unresolved and which are excluded from native production. |
checks[].method = pointer_strings |
Verify a pointer-indexed filename table against exact expected strings. Optional stride (default 4, a multiple of 4) reads tables of {id, name*} records. |
checks[].method = bcd_extent_table |
Verify an indexed BCD-MSF/size table against an ISO file's actual extent. |
checks[].method = adjacent_files |
Require the named ISO extents to be sector aligned and physically adjacent, in order. |
compositions |
Combine declared simultaneous producers in address order. max_gap bounds their separation; gap and alignment bytes remain unowned. |
expected_records |
Stop on inventory drift, including unexpected additions requiring review. Every configured image must be represented. |
strict_bounds |
Require emission to remain inside established producer intervals. |
images[].excluded_ranges |
Explicit fallback intervals with aligned start/end, original-byte SHA-256 and a reason. Requires strict bounds; required loader entries cannot be excluded. |
Image addresses must lie in the KSEG0 main-RAM decode window
0x80000000..0x80800000. Extraction recipes describe bytes and KSEG0 entries,
so their shards are KSEG0 shards. Code a title runs at KUSEG or KSEG1 gets
shards of that segment from runtime captures, which record each entry's
segment (docs/SEGMENT_AWARE_CODE.md §5.7). Retail 2 MiB hardware mirrors DRAM across all of it and
expanded 8 MiB targets decode it uniquely, so an image a loader places in a
mirror is valid; the runtime gates it on the folded bytes the CPU executes.
On retail RAM an image must also fit inside one 2 MiB mirror: one that crosses
a mirror boundary (or the 2 MiB end) has no contiguous backing, so the pipeline
rejects it rather than emit a variant the runtime gate can never accept. A
profile whose images need the opt-in 8 MB map declares
"main_ram_bytes": "0x800000" (default 0x200000).
allow_missing opts a fixed-address source into static root discovery when the
generic detector misses it. entry_word or entries can supply independently
verified loader entry points. These facts do not turn every plausible code word
into a proven function. There is no recipe option to ignore a failed compiler.
Use dispatch_entries for independently verified dispatch PCs that may be inside
an existing function, such as jump-table case labels. They are required by the
coverage audit but do not force new function boundaries. The existing decoder and
reachability checks decide whether each PC is a callable root or a hosted interior;
an interior declaration cannot truncate the function that owns it.
Each recipe compiles in an isolated cache. tools/audit_aot_cache.py checks every
native pair's ABI/exports, every manifest guard against known original bytes,
and nonzero native coverage for every recipe. Loader entry points supplied by
the profile must also have native entries guarded by that image's original bytes.
Staging copies precisely the
audited platform pairs, verifies hashes again, rejects extras, and emits
AOT_CACHE_AUDIT.json without game bytes. A missing disc, changed loader word,
missing image, compiler failure, empty recipe coverage or failed audit stops
release packaging. Pair counts are results, not inherited success thresholds.
An inventory plus valid guards still does not prove complete static execution
coverage or native semantics; keep fallback and perform gameplay spot checks.
Jersey Devil uses aligned_lzss_banks for five renderer variants across 70 bank occurrences and psx_exe for five secondary executables. Its profile accounts for all 93 BZZ containers, including 23 without code banks.
Exact-BIOS resident helper recipes also publish a .resident preload marker.
The pipeline preserves it through consolidation and staging, verifies its BIOS
hash against the recipe, and includes its hash in the audit receipt. Omitting
that marker can leave an otherwise valid helper unused at runtime.
Current consumers:
- Tomba! USA:
TombaRecomp/aot/overlays.json, 25 fixed-address images, including 17 area variants and eight support images. - Tomba! 2 USA / Tombi! 2 Italian:
Tomba2Recomp/aot/{usa,ita}.json, each with MAIN.EXE and 28 raw images, including all 22 area overlays. Their loader tables establish different regional addresses; composition uses the same shared method (including the Italian gap). US START.BIN is explicitly accounted for. - Ape Escape USA:
ApeEscapeRecomp/aot/overlays.json, 47 established packed sector-table overlays plus two minigame PS-X EXEs. Two additional archive members have unresolved load paths and are explicitly excluded. - The Legend of Dragoon USA:
aot/overlays.json,disc_setover all four discs (identical executable images). The BPE launcher's embedded container is the engine (prepared_files, two code extents at 0x80010000) and the ten BPE overlays fill slot A (0x800C6688) or slot B (0x800FB778); all linked withstatic. - WipEout 3 SE PAL:
aot/overlays.json, the front-end menu overlay (member 5 ofWIPEOUT3/NFE.PB,indexed_lzss_members) from the stock disc and from the NTSC / PAL Mode package's patched disc, plus that package's engine image; all linked withstatic(see below). The other 88 packs on the disc (TRACK*.PBP) hold data only.
Prepared images: packed executables and overlays
Some engines run code that no disc file holds verbatim: a launcher EXE that
unpacks the real executable, overlays stored compressed. The loader's transform
is deterministic, so its output is an original input like any other, provided the
transform and every byte it reads and writes are pinned. prepared_files declares
such outputs; the pipeline rebuilds them from the user's own disc every time and
nothing derived is stored or committed. The profile carries hashes, offsets, sizes
and addresses only.
"prepared_files": [{
"name": "PREPARED/ENGINE", "method": "bpe_container",
"source": {"file": "BOOT.EXE", "file_offset": "0xA00"}, "magic": "0x1A455042",
"consumed": "0x36228", "source_sha256": "...", "size": "0xD7800", "sha256": "..."
}]
The decoder must consume exactly consumed bytes, whose SHA-256 is
source_sha256, and produce exactly size bytes with SHA-256 sha256; any
difference stops the run. A prepared name may not be a real disc file or alias, and
a later entry may read an earlier one. Prepared names then work in
fixed_address_files, fixed_address_extents, words and pointer_strings, so the
loader code that fixes the destination is verified against the very bytes that run.
Methods: bpe_container (tools/bpe_container.py): block-wise byte-pair
expansion, u32 size, u32 magic, {u32 block size, pair table, symbols}*, 0. The
magic is a required parameter.
A packed image is rarely all code (its BSS, tables and replaced overlay area are
data). Use fixed_address_extents on the prepared file to name only the code runs,
each with its sha256, so data is never a producer: a data run decoded as code
fails the generated-C audit and costs the whole image.
Executable images from a mod package
A trusted package can add code that no disc file contains: patched boot-EXE
text, or an engine the patched EXE copies elsewhere. Such bytes are still
original inputs plus declared, hash-verified operations, so they get the same
treatment as disc methods. tools/mod_package_images.py reproduces a package's
selected operations; the pipeline never reads a package it was not told about.
"mod_packages": [{
"name": "engine-full", "manifest": "mods/<package>/<version>/manifest.toml",
"manifest_sha256": "<LF-normalized text hash>", "id": "<package id>", "version": "<version>",
"features": {"<feature>": {"<option>": "<value>"}}, "plugins": ["<selected plugin ids>"]
}]
The reader checks the manifest hash, id/version, a [[target]] matching the
game id, original disc and boot-EXE hashes, every selected feature and option
value, and the exact set of selected plugins (native callbacks; they add no
guest bytes and are reported, not modelled). It applies the static declarative
subset of the runtime resolver, in the runtime's order: disc_user patches and
file-backed overlays (checked against payload and stock-range hashes) feed every
file read, including the boot EXE, because the BIOS loads it through CD
reads; equal-length main_exe patches then apply to that loaded image, with
their guards checked against it exactly as the runtime checks RAM after the
load. A guard that matches the stock EXE but not the loaded one is the plan the
runtime rejects ("expected-byte guard failed; booting unmodified") — the edit is
encoded twice — and the reader refuses it. It rejects replace_from, fields,
when_integer, disc_raw, legacy packages, a disc operation that changes the
boot EXE's PS-X header, and any unknown section or key rather than
approximating them. Overlapping operations fail.
transfer_entries counts words the package WROTE: every word a main_exe
patch covers, and every boot-EXE word a disc operation changes from the stock
value (a sector-granular overlay also rewrites unchanged words, which are not
evidence).
Establish the destination from the patched loader exactly as for a disc image:
a words check with mod_package pins the copy loop or load call, and a
fixed_address_extents image names the copied bytes with their SHA-256. A detour
farm is entered only from the package's patched transfers; transfer_entries
turns those into required entries without accepting stock data words that
happen to decode as jumps.
WipEout 3 SE PAL (aot/overlays.json) uses this for the NTSC / PAL Mode
package's NTSC + Full (hueponik ntscfull8) engine: the patched entry copies
0x790 words from 0x800D03B8 to 0x80780000, and 46 patched J/JAL sites
establish its entries. Since package 1.1.0 every one of those edits arrives
through the disc overlays over the EXE's sectors; 1.0.14 also carried them as
stock-guarded main_exe patches, which the runtime rejected at boot.
Linking recipes into the runtime (static)
static --out-dir <dir> [--cps] performs the same extraction, compiles every
recipe with compile_overlays.py --static, and audits the generated dispatcher:
each variant must be guarded by the original bytes of a recipe whose producer
bounds contain its code ranges, every image needs guarded entries, and every
required entry must be served. Only then does it replace <dir>/overlays_static*.c
with exactly the audited files plus AOT_STATIC_AUDIT.json. Point the game's
GAME_OVERLAY_STATIC_C at <dir>/overlays_static.c. The static path suits a
runtime flavor the DLL release cannot target (for example a PGXP build); pass
--cps when the runtime is continuation-passing, as the compiler requires.
It ships compiled. The shard is generated on the developer's machine,
committed with the rest of generated/, and linked by release CI into the
shipped executable (docs/ci/BUNDLED_RELEASES.md); the overlay cache is
never built in CI, so this shard is the native overlay coverage a release
carries. A profile opts in by declaring where the build links it:
"static_output": "generated/overlays_static.c"
(project-relative, file name overlays_static.c). psxrecomp_cli.py generate,
which the setup wizard and the Retro launcher's Generate & Build run, then runs
static after it writes the game C, with the same psxrecomp-game, the
generated dispatch's CPS mode, the verified disc, and --reuse. --out-dir
defaults to that declaration. The title's CMake must pass the same file as
GAME_OVERLAY_STATIC_C: runtime/overlay_static_sources.cmake fails the
configure if the two disagree or GAME_OVERLAY_STATIC_C is missing, and warns
when the file is absent while game C is linked. Profiles for titles that stage
an audited DLL cache with release leave static_output out, and Generate
builds nothing for them.
- Reuse. The receipt records
generation_inputs: the profile,game.toml, data-track digests, the recompiler binary and its cache tag, every framework tool module the pipeline runs, the selected mod packages' files, CPS mode, and the BIOS resident inputs when the profile uses them. With--reusean unchanged set and unmodified published files skip the build.generate --force-aot-staticrebuilds anyway. - Another disc. When the data track does not match
disc_hashes,staticexits 3 (--clear-if-not-applicablefirst removes the published units). Generate fails if that disc matchedgame.toml's[prepare_disc]digests, because then the title contradicts itself. For an unverified dump it warns and goes on, and those images run interpreted. - Failures are generate errors that keep the work directory
(
.cache/aot-static/) with its logs.generate --no-aot-staticskips the step and says so. staticwritesruntime/include/overlay_codegen_hash.hfrom the codegen sources (hash_codegen.cmakewithPSXRECOMP_CODEGEN_HASH_ROOT) before it compiles. Otherwise the runtime build writes that header, and it does not exist yet when Generate runs on a fresh tree, socompile_overlays' stale recompiler check would fail against a hash of 0.--disc <cue>selects the dump to read. The default is the game config's[game].disc.
For packed_sector_members, declare table_file, ordered payload_files,
sector_size (default 2048), offset_bits (default 20), and optional
table_offset. A descriptor's low bits are the logical sector offset and its
remaining high bits are the sector count. Members cannot cross payload-file
boundaries. inventory_range gives inclusive first/last descriptor indices;
every index must occur once in either members or excluded_members.
Executable members carry index, load_addr, and optionally verified entries.
Exclusions require a reason. cover_payloads names files that this entire
classified range must cover exactly, without gaps or overlaps. The shared reader
is tools/packed_sector_table.py; heuristic discovery uses that same parser.
For indexed_lzss_members (reader: tools/indexed_lzss_pack.py), declare
file, count_offset (u32 member count), table_offset (12-byte
{u32 offset, u32 size, u32 stored} descriptors), alignment of each member
start, the exact count, and every LZSS parameter explicitly; there are no
defaults. Members follow the table in descriptor order. Every other byte
before the end of the table, all padding and any tail after the last member
must be zero. A member whose stored size differs from its size is a bit-stream
LZSS stream that must decode to exactly size bytes while consuming exactly
stored bytes:
| LZSS parameter | Meaning |
|---|---|
position_bits |
Width of a window position; the ring window holds 1 << position_bits bytes. Position 0 ends the stream. |
length_bits |
Width of the copy count field. |
min_match |
Bytes copied for a count of zero; a reference copies count + min_match bytes. |
initial_position |
Window slot receiving the first output byte. |
window_fill |
Optional initial byte of every window slot. Omit it when the original decoder leaves its window uninitialized: reading a slot this stream never wrote then fails extraction as a dependency on pre-existing RAM. |
Bits are read most significant first. A 1 flag precedes an 8-bit literal; a 0
flag precedes a position and a count. Each output byte is also stored at the
current window slot, so a reference may read bytes it has just written.
Executable members carry index, load_addr, decoded_sha256 and optionally
verified entries; excluded_members need a reason. Every index must be
classified exactly once. When the loader can also take the same pack from
elsewhere, such as a copy linked into the boot EXE, list each place in
identical_copies ({file, file_offset, size, reason}); extraction requires
those bytes to equal the pack exactly and records them as aliases.
WipEout 3's MenuControl (0x801179B8) opens c:\wipeout3\nfe.pb. The first
open after boot reads no file: a preload flag starts at 1 and the pack is the
copy linked at the start of SCES_028.45 (0x80010000, the main heap base);
once that pack is consumed the flag clears and later opens read the disc file.
Both copies are identical, including under the framerate package. It requires its
allocation of the top member to land exactly at 0x800BF800, has the pack reader
run lzss.c ExpandData (13-bit position, 4-bit count, three-byte minimum,
start position 1, uninitialized 8 KiB window) and copies the decoded 0x21424
bytes there without relocation, then calls five of its functions directly. The
profile pins those instructions with words checks. The decoded image is
byte-identical to the RAM at 0x800BF800 in a stock run's menu. The same reader
and decoder account for all 5,178 members of the disc's 89 packs. This is the
only member the executable transfers control to, and the only one with MIPS
function shapes; the rest go to data loaders (textures, models, track tables).
See tools/tests/test_aot_overlay_pipeline.py for synthetic method and release
failure tests. A new title should add a profile when these contracts fit; add
and test a shared method only when its actual loader requires one.
The reusable boundary
A title-specific producer should supply facts about memory images. The shared compiler should consume those facts without knowing game names or addresses. Keep each producer responsible for:
- Source identity: disc revision, file/member offsets, sizes and hashes.
- Transform: verbatim load, decompression or relocation, with the inputs needed to reproduce its result. Record how the loader establishes these facts.
- Destination: address of each actual file/member and the combinations that can coexist. Regional editions need their own source and layout verification.
- Known byte intervals and entry evidence: exports, loader entry tables, direct calls or supported static discovery. Preserve the distinction between function roots and interior dispatch targets.
Common container readers, decoders, relocation handling and instruction-pattern recognizers belong in the framework once their contracts can be stated and tested independently. A game's selector table or file naming convention belongs in its recipe. Repeated methods can then be reused without treating a previous title's addresses, hashes or runtime captures as authority for a new one.
Useful producer families include fixed-address raw files, self-describing PS-X EXEs, archive members, deterministic compressed images and relocatable images. The first three have existing extractor support for specific formats. The last two need a verified transform; arbitrary compression/relocation is not inferred automatically. Code that depends on runtime state may need multiple bounded variants or continued fallback.
A bounded discovery and build
- Identify the exact disc revision and enumerate candidate files. Hash original inputs before attempting extraction. Include shared code and loader helpers, not only files named like areas.
- Establish destinations and entry points from headers and loader behavior. Treat heuristic votes as candidates. If two bases nearly tie, investigate the specific loader path or skip the file; do not select the convenient answer.
- Emit independently reproducible memory-image recipes with known ranges. Build standalone producers first, then justified shared-code combinations.
- Compile using the same framework headers, compiler configuration, backend, architecture and flavor as the runtime being shipped.
- Audit published pairs and exercise transitions with runtime compilation off. Retain fallback and document rejected or unresolved candidates.
For formats the generic extractor recognizes, run from the framework directory:
python tools/aot_overlay_spike/extract_generic.py \
--game-toml /path/to/game.toml \
--recompiler /path/to/psxrecomp-game \
--out /private/aot/disc-records.json \
--tmp /private/aot/extraction
python tools/compile_overlays.py \
--captures /private/aot/disc-records.json \
--game-toml /path/to/game.toml \
--recompiler /path/to/psxrecomp-game \
--runtime-include /path/to/psxrecomp/runtime/include \
--out-dir /path/to/runtime/cache \
--compiler gcc --gcc /path/to/gcc --flavor 0 --jobs 1
These are developer commands; use actual executable paths (.exe on Windows).
Flavor 0 is an example matching the baseline Tomba 2 tests, not a universal
setting. Other native flavors need matching artifacts. The full command can
perform additional cross-variant discovery. To bound expensive investigation,
compile one producer record per invocation into the same cache, then deliberately
add supported combinations. That trades some discovery breadth for a predictable
scope; it does not establish completeness.
Disc recipes must explicitly declare guard_bytes: 0 when no runtime-capture
guard word was appended. The legacy capture heuristic can otherwise trim four
real bytes from an image whose length is four bytes beyond a page boundary.
The generic extractor now emits this declaration; verify it when adapting older
output or adding a custom producer. This field concerns
capture padding; native function guards still apply.
Declare producer_ranges using half-open [start, end) intervals for bytes
owned by each original source. A sparse image may have padding between files.
Padding used to serialize that image is not evidence of actual RAM contents.
Do not seed, discover or guard code across unknown intervals. If a candidate
really depends on those bytes, establish their producer or leave it unsupported.
Validation and release gates
Keep three different claims separate:
| Claim | Evidence needed |
|---|---|
| The memory image was reconstructed correctly | Exact original-file/transform checks, loader destination evidence and bounded known ranges. |
| The cache can be selected safely | Matching namespace/flavor and ABI, exports, pair identity, all declared guard and delay-slot bytes, index capacity. |
| The translated game behavior works | Meaningful execution checks and player movement, interaction, audio, graphics and area round trips. |
Audit every published pair, including supplemental fragments. A manifest row count is not a count of independently proven functions. Multiple recipes may reuse the same guarded native function when its required bytes match; a separate DLL per combination is unnecessary. Conversely, a successful file inventory cannot excuse a compile/audit rejection. Keep nonzero outcomes visible and review any accepted partial result explicitly.
During a static-cache playtest set PSX_OVERLAY_AUTOCOMPILE_OFF=1 and omit the
configured runtime compilation command. Inspect autocompile_status to verify
that compilation is disabled and no builds ran. Inspect overlay_loader_status
for native dispatch, loaded candidates and capacity overflows. Runtime capture
or live RAM observations may help identify an exercised area; they must not
silently become inputs to a supposedly disc-only build.
Existing captured shards are investigative references, not correctness or completeness oracles. Matching their entry list or containing every observed PC does not prove correct function boundaries, emitted semantics, or coverage of unvisited paths. Byte guards prevent selection of mismatching bytes; they do not prove that the matching translation is correct. Interpreter fallback is also an implementation to validate, not an unconditional correctness guarantee.
For release, recompute the cache tag from the packaged configuration with the shared tooling; never rename a cache directory to make it look compatible. Validate every staged pair, report omitted candidates, keep user saves/disc images/capture JSON out of packages, and perform a smoke test of the packaged runtime. Preserve input hashes, source revision, commands and audit receipts so the prepared coverage can be regenerated.
Tomba 2: the same method across two regions
The US and Italian discs each contain 22 area files (A00 through A0L). The
generic extraction method recovered both sets, but the bytes and addresses
differ: US areas load at 0x80108F9C; Italian areas load at 0x8010A444.
Each region therefore needs its own verified recipes and cache namespace.
The Italian shared loader demonstrates why limited reverse engineering still
matters. The generic extractor could not confidently choose GAME's base. The
original START filename table and MAIN loader established that START, DEMO and
GAME share destination 0x80107448. GAME ends 372 bytes before the area starts.
Declaring the two original-file ranges separately allowed shared/area recipes
without inventing the contents of that gap. No full decompilation was required.
The Italian test validated 77 recipes and 74 published native pairs; many GAME combinations reused matching functions. All 22 area files had AOT candidates. The owner reported great performance in water temple and Kujara Ranch with runtime compilation disabled. These are bounded build and gameplay results, not proof that every overlay path runs natively. One earlier watchdog abort was not reproduced in the longer repeat and was not assigned a speculative fix.
The shared switch recognizer also gained support for a compiler scheduling form with table-address setup around the bounds branch. Register dependencies, producer ownership and table-target checks remain required. That improvement contains no Tomba-specific addresses and can benefit other matching binaries.
When discovery finds no game overlay
An archive extension or a historical dirty-RAM capture does not establish an executable overlay. A resident-code game is a valid outcome of bounded disc inspection. Do not count an independently identified BIOS RAM helper as a game overlay, or manufacture a release inventory from runtime observations.
tools/inspect_disc_inventory.py verifies a declarative psxrecomp disc inventory v1 profile against the original disc. It reuses the AOT evidence-word checks,
matches fixed-stride {LBA, byte-size} tables to ISO files, and exposes
typed_members(data, alignment) for archives with a {count, total-size} header
and {type, byte-size} descriptors followed by aligned members. Repeated types
are allowed; declared size, count, bounds and full payload coverage are required.
Header bytes beyond the counted descriptors are opaque.
The metadata-only report accounts for every ISO file and reports member hashes, types and aligned MIPS instruction shapes. These shapes are observations, not proof of code presence or absence; loader destinations, callbacks and any decompression path still need bounded inspection of the original executable. The game profile supplies all addresses, filenames, counts and rationales. The shared tool contains no game-specific branches or bundled game bytes.
