The force_4_3 gate was not redundant. It is the proxy for "this frame is a menu or backdrop", and present_edge_fill only makes sense there: it stretches ONE edge column across the whole margin, which is fine for a flat backdrop and disastrous for busy content. The function's own comment says so -- "wrong for content whose edge pixels are busy" -- and I removed the gate anyway on the grounds that the early-outs made it redundant. They gate on the feature flag and on margins EXISTING, not on the frame being suitable. In a race the edge columns are track geometry, so the margins filled with horizontal smears of stretched scenery down both sides. Strictly worse than the black bars it replaced. The underlying complaint stands: in plain 4:3 with no widescreen mod, menu backgrounds do not fill a wide window, because force_4_3 is only ever set by the widescreen path. Fixing that properly needs a real "is this frame a flat backdrop" test -- e.g. the edge column being near-uniform -- rather than removing the only thing currently distinguishing menus from gameplay.
