The tool reported "native-not-animating" from ONE psx-runtime sample, with the note "never moved from 128 across 1 samples". That is not a claim anyone can make, and it agreed with a hypothesis already disproved twice here — the most dangerous shape a bug can take, because it confirms what the reader suspects. The cause was the previous commit. Caching the block leader to make sampling affordable REPLACED the sweep instead of preceding it, so the moment the cached address stopped firing — an overlay reloading elsewhere, or that block simply not being reached on a pass — the run ended. A 24-sample request became one sample, and then a conclusion was drawn from it. Both halves fixed. The cached leader is now tried first and the full sweep still follows it, and a failed sample drops the cache and continues rather than ending the series. Any "constant" verdict requires at least five samples from that side; below it the result is too-few-samples, stated as such. Variation needs no floor, because two different values prove movement however few samples there are. The oracle's own series is worth recording: 112, 116, 120, 124, 128 — five distinct values in even steps of 4. Whatever psx-runtime does, the oracle sweeps its fade smoothly. """probe_regs.py -- capture psx-runtime's registers near a PC.
python3 probe_regs.py --pc 0x8006844C --want s4,s6
Why this is not simply a breakpoint
-----------------------------------
psx-runtime has no PC breakpoint. Its probe fires at BASIC-BLOCK LEADERS, which
the recompiler emits observers for, and an arbitrary mid-block address such as
a colour store never matches one. Adding a real breakpoint would mean emitting
per-instruction hooks from the recompiler -- a much larger change.
So the block containing the address is found by arming a SPREAD of candidates
around it and seeing which ones actually fire. Whatever fires is a real block
leader; the nearest one at or below the target encloses it.
What that costs in accuracy, stated plainly
-------------------------------------------
The registers are read at block ENTRY, not at the target instruction. For
callee-saved registers ($s0-$s7) set outside the loop -- which is what $s4 and
$s6 are in the colour routine -- those are the same value. For a register the
block itself computes ($v0, $t6, $a0 there) they are NOT, and this tool will
report a value that is real but taken earlier than asked for. It flags which
class each requested register falls into rather than leaving that to be
remembered.
