Preserve configuration paths and constituent actions independently of aggregate status. Derive summaries from all leaf outcomes, including after final cleanup reporting, so a later failure cannot hide an earlier removal.
Closes#5079
Resolve the current named POSIX account through OS identity rather than the
caller-selected HOME/USERPROFILE. Preserve the home prefix for repeated
separators using the same joining semantics as the existing ~/ branch.
Require an absolute HERMES_HOME for unresolved names and Windows named forms
before exposing config or skill write destinations. Reuse the shared Hermes
path owner and existing diagnostics across setup, doctor, skills and uninstall.
Validation: 113 checks across seven files pass, including the compiled CLI
setup/doctor/skill/repeat/uninstall workflow over an owned profile beneath the
actual account home and a separate caller home. The isolated unchanged baseline
fails the five new checks and passes44existing checks; final repeated-separator
controls also fail that baseline. Static/docs/discovery1559 pass. Both source
reviewers clear after correcting repeated-separator composition.
Twelve completed setup dry runs compare normal and named overrides, with exact
normal-home replies unchanged. Measurements have source hashes and separate
first/warm runs; no speedup, full Hermes agent/model or native Windows/Linux
qualification claim. No provider software was installed; heavy tests/profiling
remain stopped.
Fixes#4841
* fix(setup): configure a comment-only Hermes config.yaml
comments, or only a `---` marker, also parses to a null YAML document.
Setup still rejected it as malformed ("expected record, received null")
and reported Hermes as invalid.
Treat a null Hermes document as holding no settings, as #1983 does for
an empty file. The serializer already edits a comment-only document in
place. A bare `---` document holds a null scalar that takes no keys, so
replace it with a map and keep the comments written after the marker.
* fix(setup): keep rejecting an explicit null Hermes root
Only a document with no root, or a bare --- marker whose null scalar has
no source text, holds no settings. An explicit null or ~ is a value, so
setup and uninstall reject it as before, the same as any other non-map
root.
* test(setup): split the Hermes empty-configuration tests under the function length limit
The Hermes YAML registration block reached 159 lines, past oxlint's
max-lines-per-function limit of 150. Move the empty-document cases and
the multiple-document rejection into their own block.
* fix(setup): type the Hermes edit document as a plain Document
parseDocument with options returns a Document.Parsed, whose contents
accept only parsed nodes, so assigning the new map for a bare --- root
failed typecheck (TS2322). Annotate the edited document as Document, as
the code did before it moved into HermesConfigurationYaml.ts.
* fix(ci): isolate Linux Hopper process fixture inventory

Setup and uninstall re-printed every number in an existing Hermes
config.yaml from a JavaScript number. Hermes reads the file as YAML 1.1
with exact integers, so a Discord channel ID lost its low digits, an
octal mode such as 0600 became 600, and 0.0000001 became 1e-7, which
YAML 1.1 does not define as a float. Two IDs that round to the same
double were also rejected as duplicate keys, so setup could not
register at all.
Hermes YAML parsing and editing move to HermesConfigurationYaml. A parsed
number is written with its source spelling while that spelling still
reads as the node's value, the rule yaml's own boolean tag follows, and
two keys are duplicates only when both their value and their spelling
match. Parsed values stay JavaScript numbers.
* fix(setup): name invalid client config shape errors clearly
Setup was dumping raw Zod issues for non-object roots or server tables,
and uninstall always claimed the file was not valid JSON. Report the
structural problem instead, and reserve parse failures for real syntax errors.

* fix(setup): preserve client configuration record validation
Keep descriptive shape errors while retaining Zod record validation and its own-property copy. Reject tagged YAML objects before setup or uninstall writes and prevent inherited JSONC properties from fabricating client registrations.
Add production-boundary regressions for tagged YAML roots and server tables, plus inherited Cursor and OpenCode settings. All 91 focused tests, npm run check, verify:test-discovery, verify:package, and npm pack --dry-run passed.

* fix(setup): treat an empty Hermes config.yaml as a new document
YAML parses an empty file to null, so Hermes configuration was checked
as an object before the shared empty-file rule and rejected. Setup then
failed its readback gate for a zero-byte config.yaml, although a missing
file is configured and the Hermes serializer already writes a fresh
document for empty original text. Apply the empty-file rule before the
Hermes YAML parse, as #1117 did for JSON clients.
* test(setup): configure an empty Hermes config.yaml
Configure zero-byte and newline-only config.yaml files through the
real filesystem workflow, then read the registration back as aligned.
* feat: add Hermes as a supported MCP client
Hermes Agent reads stdio MCP servers from `mcp_servers.<name>` in
`config.yaml`. REA had no Hermes client, so setup could not register it and
Hermes users had to wire the server up by hand.
- SupportedClients: add the `hermes` format and client definition, resolving
the config path from HERMES_HOME, else the platform default that Hermes's own
resolver uses (LOCALAPPDATA/hermes on Windows, ~/.hermes elsewhere), including
HERMES_DATA_DIR_SUFFIX.
- ClientConfigurationDocument: parse and serialize Hermes YAML, upserting the
rea entry into the parsed document so user comments and unrelated settings are
preserved; emit `enabled: true` since Hermes connects entries unless disabled.
- ClientRegistrationStatus: forward the Hermes location variables so status
checks resolve the same path as setup.
- Tests: cover path resolution on both platforms and the register/read/uninstall
round trip, and clear the Hermes location variables between tests.
