# G20 -- Derive, don't re-derive
Where a proven invariant answers a question, derive the answer from it rather than re-parsing the world; a metric derived
from the build's own link map beats one that re-scans the source. The best outcome of a tooling review is a deleted scanner.
provenance: BFM R33; the main-executable denominator that was 3,616 words short until derived from the link map
